Obituary for Roger D Thomas

Roger D. Thomas of Chicago, age 96, passed peacefully at his home on January 13, 2021, surrounded by his loving daughters. Roger built a lifetime of loving memories with his wife, children, sister, brothers, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He also appreciated Sam, his devoted caregiver for the past two years.

On Sundays, Roger enjoyed church services at St. James Lutheran followed by family dinner, preferably including his favorite rice and roast beef, before he headed out to work at Belt Railway. An active member of St. James until his health declined, Roger participated in the Men’s Group, Church Council and choir. For many years, he arrived at church early to make the Sunday coffee and proudly rang the bell at the church entrance to signify the end of the coffee hour and the start of the worship service.

He will be forever remembered by his great-granddaughter for making her laugh by imitating animal sounds.

Roger was happiest when with his family, being in his home and sleeping in his own bed. His generosity, kindness and fun personality will be remembered fondly by his family and friends.

Roger’s life will be celebrated in a private service with interment at Oak Woods Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers to honor Roger’s life, memorial donations may be made to:
