Nadine Frances Bogan was born to Julia Hamilton and William Young in Chicago, Illinois on April 17, 1933. Nadine was reared by Corrine Robinson. Nadine reconnected with her birth mother, Julia (Hamilton) Moreland while a teen and moved to Chicago, where she graduated from Englewood High School. Nadine established life long friends in high school. Nadine met, fell in love, and married Roger Coleman in 1952. Nadine and Roger were blessed with two children. Later, Nadine married James Smelser in 1962 and was also blessed with her baby girl. As a child, Nadine was born into the Catholic faith at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, where she also attended elementary school. Nadine’s devotion to Catholicism culminated at St. Thomas Apostle Church, where she held various roles including leadership for the bereavement committee, Head Sacristan for week day and week end masses, Minister of Care, Usher, membership on the Liturgy and Arts and Environment Committee, and per St. Thomas” head and most important volunteer”. Nadine excelled in her academic and career endeavors. She committed to a lifelong passion for social work by completing a Bachelor of Arts and a Masters of Social Work from Roosevelt University. She worked at several places including the Chicago Board of Education before joining the ranks of professional social workers with the Illinois Department of Children and Family Service (DCFS).   This height of her career endeavors resulted in a span of 25 years where she retired. Following her retirement, Nadine did market and social research for the National Opinion Research Center (NORC). For over a decade, Nadine performed as a proctor for the Law School Admissions Test at various Chicago locations. Nadine was known among her many friends and family members as a Social Worker both by profession and by her sincere devotion to helping others in her personal life. Following retirement, she also did a two-year stint in the Peace Corps, in rural Jamaica. Nadine had a number of hobbies which she shared lovingly and competently with friends & family. She began her life long interest in theatrical performance in the 1960’s, which included an award for best actress from the Dramatic Arts Guild. Nadine was a member of the Hyde Park Community Players. Her last performance was in 2013 in “An Evening of Horror and Suspense”, in which she played Agnes DelaCroix. Nadine pioneered home -based wine clubs in the 1980’s. She was fond of travel, taking many cruises with friends and excursions to distant places such as the Cuba, the Bahamas, Mexico, Great Britain, France, Hawaii, and across the United States. Nadine was passionate about English language both in practice and study. For over a decade, Nadine participated in a book club that kept her thirst for knowledge active and passionate. She was also an avid Bid Whist player and enjoyed attending live jazz performances with friends. Mather’s restaurant was the site of a great deal of fun and relaxation for Nadine and her beloved core of friends. One of the most endearing lifelong qualities of Nadine was her remembrance of birthdays.
