Obituary for Katie M. Edwards

Katie Mae Brown Edwards was born on August 9, 1927 in Smithville, GA, the first child of Terrell and Nellie (Albritton) Brown. She was called home to the Lord on September 28, 2022 after a brief illness.
Katie attended elementary school in Smithville. For high school, she moved to Chicago to live with her aunt to attend Wendell Phillips High School. She graduated in 1946.

After high school, she attended Wilson Junior College and began working in a doctor’s office. She met her future husband, Roy Edwards, on a blind date. They were married in 1950. They were blessed with one child, Carla Edwards Brown.

Katie later worked as a School Clerk for the Chicago Board of Education. She worked at many elementary schools on the south side during her career, including Beethoven, Barton, Poe, and Ruggles. She retired in 1990.
After the death of her husband in 2007, Katie continued living on the south side of Chicago until 2014. She then moved to Romeoville, Il to be closer to her daughter and family.

While in Chicago, Katie was a member of Greater Institutional AME Church. After moving, she attended DuPage AME Church in Lisle until her death.

In addition to her husband Roy, Katie was preceded in death by her sister Ethel and her brother Curtis. She leaves to mourn her daughter Carla (Julian) Brown, grandsons Darren (Jasmyn) Brown and Andrew Brown, and great-grandsons Hendrix and Ellington Brown. She will also be remembered and missed by many cousins, nieces, and friends.
