Obituary for Irma Mary English

Irma Mary English, a retired crossing guard with the City of Chicago, received her heavenly wings on Sunday, December 6, 2020 at the tender age of 91.

Irma was born in Mound Bayou, Mississippi on June 29, 1929 to William Claude Suttles and Daisy Bailey Suttles. She came to Chicago at the age of four. She attended Forrestville Elementary School and Farren Elementary School and graduated June 1943. She graduated from DuSable High School in June 1947.  She later attended Wilson Junior College for two years and Peters Business School.  In 1955 she met and married Robert W. English, and from that union four children were born: William, Sherwin, Patricia, and Romain. 

Irma, worked at Kuppenheimer Cloths, Woolworth, Spiegel, World Book Encyclopedia, United States Post Office, and the City of Chicago as a Crossing Guard where she retired. 

Irma was a devoted mother and served in various positions on PTA ‘s at her children’s school. She loved arts and crafts and was heavily involved in her Block Club and was a member of the CAPS program. Irma was a spiritual child of God and involved with many church activities at her House of Worship, Trinity United Church of Christ under the leadership of Jeremiah Wright and Otis Moss, III.

Irma is survived by her brother; Jesse Naylor, her children; William (Dora), Sherwin (Shawn), Patricia (Elder Bobbi) and Romain (Carolyn); her grandchildren; LeSean, Raphael, Keshia, Anthony, & Evan, her great-grandchildren; Justin, Shiloh, LeSean II, D’andre, Bre, Jaden Rakai, andRaphael Jr, her great-great grandchildren; Easton, and Malakai, her beloved spiritual daughter; Doris Harris-Gayles and spiritual grandson; Jaamal Gayles and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Irma is preceded by her husband Robert W. English, mother, Daisy Bailey Suttles, her father William Claude Suttles and her brother Marvin Suttles. 

Irma will be deeply missed by her family, friends and all who knew of her.
