Beverly J. Blackwood

Beverly Blackwood passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, January 20, 2021. She was born in 1923 to Charles and Ethel Blackwood. She joined her older siblings, Virginia and Charles, Jr. Both preceded her in death. Beverly was born and raised in Trinidad, Colorado. After graduation from high school, she tested and placed into a position in the United States Treasury Department in Washington DC. During WWII, the United States Federal Government moved the Treasury Department to Chicago. The government felt that the interior of the country was a safer location in wartime. Later, her sister, Virginia, joined her in Chicago.

Beverly decided to leave her federal government post and become a teacher. She graduated from Roosevelt University with a degree in education. She mentored many students. The majority of her teaching career was at Douglas Community Academy where she became principal. Beverly served the Chicago Public Schools for fifty-one years.

She was a faithful member of University Church at 57th and University. She participated in church activities and attended faithfully until her illness.

Beverly was very sociable and had many interests. She loved to play bridge. She was a founding member of the Midwest Bridge Club on 87th Street. She played there several days a week until her 90’s. She belonged to a number of bridge clubs that met monthly. These were events that she looked forward to attending. She was competitive and enjoyed winning points and first place prizes. She traveled extensively domestically and internationally. Beverly spent every April at Orange Lake in Orlando, Florida. She visited Africa, the Middle East and China.

To cherish her memory, Beverly is survived by her two nieces, Margretta Marchbanks (Ellsner) and Jane White (Everett) and her nephew Charles Blackwood III. She will be missed by three grandnieces, Margretta Browne, Eve West (Derek) and Jill Cross (Chadrick); one grandnephew, William Browne (Michelle); three great-nieces, Alexandria Browne, Lena Williams and Lauren West; five great-nephews, William Browne, James Cross, Jason Cross, John Cross and Nicholas West. She leaves behind cousins and a host of friends and colleagues.
